Janelle Monáe praised for her recent outstanding roles in the movies “Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight” and also her musical career, raises awareness around the world when she is not in the spotlight. She reminds the world of global concerns about education, disease, and poverty. She has played a part in Let Girls Learn, Keep a Child Alive and several other benevolent and charitable campaigns and projects.
She partnered with the first lady Michelle Obama, Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliot, Kelly Rowland and Zendaya for collaboration for a charity song titled “This is for my girls.” The single “This is for my girls” supported two campaigns, Let Girls Learn and #62MillionGirls that help women and girls all over the world who do not have access to qualitative and proper education.
Young girls around the world face several complex difficulties and struggle to get a good education. Education guides them through life and equips them with required skills and knowledge to combat poverty and attain their full potentials. Let Girls Learn recognizes these struggles and it works towards ensuring girls get the proper education they deserve. The project is made up of several public-private partnerships, and they entice and invite others to join and put in resources to help develop and improve the lives of young girls around the world. Let Girls Learn finances projects and efforts that increase and extend the opportunities for good and qualitative education for girls in regions of crisis.
Monáe raises awareness about HIV/AIDS worldwide in addition to supporting education. She became an ambassador for the recently formed power council for Keep a Child Alive. Monáe said, “we need to come together and use our voice to help put an end to the epidemic.” Globally, HIV/AIDS is the second leading cause of death, and 1.8million children are infected with HIV/AIDS. Keep a Child Alive is an organization whose mission is “to realize the end of AIDS for children and their families, by combating the physical, social and economic impact of HIV.” This organization provides adequate medical care and treatment to persons suffering from this disease, but they also stress the importance of prevention.
Monáe has also made efforts at the state level, mainly in Flint, Michigan. She was present at a benefit event that generated nearly $156,000 for residents of Flint that were affected by lead-contaminated water. The Human Rights event #JusticeForFlint saw a great turnout of about 2000 people and received more than 4000 online donations. Lead poisoning and exposure can lead to several health problems, like behavioral disorder, delayed puberty, impaired cognition, hearing problems and reduced fetal growth in pregnant women.
Monáe has influence in the entertainment industry through which she serves a charitable need and raises awareness around the world. Individuals can look to finding ways to lend a helping hand to their communities and beyond, just like Monáe.
