Girls Star Zosia Mamet Designs Tee to Raise Funds for ACLU
Lena Dunham might be the Girls star who’s most outspoken about politics and women’s rights, but that isn’t stopping her co-stars from getting involved. Zosia Mamet, who plays the precocious Shoshanna, is using her influence to take a stand on immigration.
Mamet partnered with New York-based yoga studio Y7 to design a charity t-shirt. It’s a black short-sleeved cotton t-shirt featuring the Statue of Liberty in a meditative pose. The back of the shirt is printed with The New Colossus, Emma Lazarus’ 1883 poem that’s engraved on a plaque at the Statue of Liberty.
The poem reads:
“Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
MOTHER OF EXILES. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
100% of the proceeds will go to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a driving force in the fight against President Donald Trump’s immigration ban and refugee freeze.
The official Y7 site reads, “We are a country founded by immigrants. Humans who fled to a new land in search of a fresh start. New York historically has been a beacon of that fresh start, a safe haven. Lady liberty standing tall in open water welcoming those looking for home.”
More than a simple fundraiser, the tees represent the freedom of America and the acceptance of all those who’ve come here to better their lives.
The same message from the Y7 site captioned Mamet’s February 3 Instagram post announcing the partnership. In that photo, she was pictured mid-pose with two of her friends. All three were outfitted in the limited-edition top.
Mamet is no stranger to charity. She has previously been involved with the Best Friends Animal Society and Holiday Marketplace for Charity.
