America is founded on core democratic principles that have long been upheld and promoted. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is not just a declaration but a reality for many Americans irrespective of color, race, or gender. “The land of opportunity” or “the land of dreams” as she is fondly called has created a nurturing environment for people of all color and creeds to pursue their dreams no matter how tall or far-flung they may be.
This impressive reality was reinforced by Ilhan Omar who just recently accomplished a monumental feat by being the first Somali legislator in the United States. Ilhan Omar, who is just 34, was elected to serve as a member of parliament in the state of Minnesota deposed the longest serving members of the legislature. The highlight of this remarkable event is accentuated by the fact that Ilhan was a former refugee who fled Somalia with her family at the young age of eight in order to escape the ravaging civil war. Her unexpected ascendancy to leadership is an inspiration for many marginalized people who constantly struggle with feelings of insecurity and inferiority.
The staggering accomplishment of Ilhan Omar and many others like her who have demonstrated unwavering tenacity, determination and sincerity of purpose would continue to inspire people of all color and backgrounds, buttressing the overstated fact that if you dream it you can always achieve it!
