Stand Up! Girls Owns the Room

BNtheMix.com/ NEW YORK, March 19, 2018 – Stand Up! Girls, a nonprofit organization using stand up comedy to empower young women from underserved communities, will be hosting its inaugural Comedy Performance Showcase featuring 12 girls from Harlem’s Democracy Prep Endurance High School at the landmark venue Comic Strip Live on March 25 at 3 PM. Acclaimed comedians Regina DeCicco, Ethan Herschenfeld, and Areshia McFarlin will also perform at the Showcase.

Stand Up! Girls works to educate and inspire girls from underserved communities with the communication skills necessary to succeed and lead in male-dominated workplaces. By honing their comedy skills through writing workshops, coaching, and personal exploration, young women from underserved communities are provided the opportunity to learn how to clearly express and articulate themselves through comedy performance. Through several months of after-school classes at charter schools like Endurance High, girls who participate in Stand Up! Girls’ tuition-free programs learn to own the room – be it a courtroom, boardroom, or operating room.

Holly Weiss, Founder and President of Stand Up! Girls and a partner at Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP specializing in employment law, says, “We’re incredibly proud of our premier class of Stand Up! Girls. These young women have worked so hard and made tremendous progress in owning their space and finding their voices.”

Weiss adds, “By teaching these girls that their voices, thoughts and stories matter, we’re working to create a new generation of confident and empowered women who have the skills to speak emphatically and captivate any audience they face in their future careers.”

Brian Duran, Arts Education Director at Democracy Prep, states, “Stand Up! Girls has encouraged our scholars to bloom into confident, capable public speakers and creative leaders. Comedy is a unique outlet and means of expression, and the futures of these young women will benefit greatly from learning how to own their narratives in this way.”

Tickets for the Performance Showcase are $40, with proceeds benefitting the expansion of Stand Up! Girls and the communities the organization serves.
