Horizon Goodwill Honors MLK Day Spearheading Day of Community Service

BNtheMix.com – HAGERSTOWN, MD – JANUARY 11, 2018 – During his life, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led the Civil Rights Movement and helped end legal segregation of African American citizens. He was known for his fight for equality and his service to others. Monday January 15, 2018 is The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service nationwide. This year Horizon Goodwill organized a project and joined forces with over 12 community partners to host a day of service to build 15 Little Free Libraries for Washington County, MD. CEO, John McCain, said “We believe in transforming our community, starting with the children. We know that if children lack basic literacy skills, it is linked with academic failure, substance abuse, unemployment, welfare dependence and a host of other problems. If we can start to move the needle of literacy with the younger generation then we can reduce the amount of people who experience these issues as adults. And this will equate to stronger families and building more stable communities.”

The Little Free Library Build event will take place from 9AM- 2PM at Horizon Goodwill Industries, located at 200 Prospect Street Hagerstown, MD. Together with Washington County Early Childhood Advisory Council (ECAC), the Judy Center, and United Way of Washington County, we are going to build 15 Little Free Libraries to help reach ECAC’s goal of 50+ free libraries across the Washington County. Last year over 35 organizations took part in collecting and distributing 14,000 books in Little Free Libraries here.

Other contributors for this Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, including over 70 volunteers, are United Way Youth United, WCPS (Hancock High School and Tech High), Washington County Parks and Recreation, Women’s Giving Circle and Junior Women’s Circle, The Community Foundation of Washington County, Middletown Valley Bank, the Association of Builders and Contractors, James Rumsey Practical Nursing Program, Home Depot, and Hamilton Nissan!
